Who is Responsible for Students Learning?

I feel that parents and family have a huge influence on a students learning in the beginning stages of the process. If I child has parents that are going to help the student learn and be better educated it will help the student out in the long run. I think parents should help show and explain the importance kids the value of education at a young age. Also something that I have noticed with some of my friends is that their brothers and sisters helped them out in learning how to read and do math. Not that it is their job, but I do think it is a way that it can help. Then I would say that teachers have a big role in the learning process because they can be the first real influence on a kid besides their parents and family. So I feel it is important for them to establish that trust and understanding that they are there to help them learn and become better well rounded people. As a student gets older the responsibility turns more towards the student and less on the parents, family, and teachers. Not that the teachers job is less important it is just that it is students job to become more responsible and do more learning on their own.

  1. I agree with this breakdown, and most of the blog postings I've looked over this week and everyone seems to have similar ideas. I personally am glad that I've had this figured out for a while because now that we are in college it is important to realize that the responsibility to learn is almost entirely on us. If someone were to take no responsibility for their learning at this stage in the process, they would quickly be left behind. They would not do their homework or study enough for exams and would probably fail out very quickly. Its interesting to try and break it down since it is not clear when this change occurs and there are not specific checkpoints in the process, it just happens.

  2. I agree that family plays a very important role in the whole learning process. However, I believe that the example you gave about having older siblings help can lead to negative outcomes as well. For example, say a student has an older sister who has helped this student with his homework and has facilitated the learning process throughout his whole education experience. Now say that this older sister has gotten accepted into an out of state college and has to leave her family behind. Aside losing his sister, this young student will also be losing a valuable tool and will likely find it more difficult to fully understand new concepts and materials. For this reason, I believe that siblings could play a helpful role in student learning, but only if they are making sure that their younger siblings are not becoming dependent on their aid.
