Who is Responsible for Student Learning?

The people most responsible for student learning, in my opinoin, are the parents/guardians of the student. Although there are many other people who play significant roles, such as teachers or administrators, I believe the role of the parent is the most essential one. A parent instills the values of hard work and dedication, which are imperative for a child to learn. A teacher can work tirelessly to try and give students knowledge, but if the student is unwilling to learn the teacher's efforts are in vain. Besides instilling values in students that foster learning, parents also play an intricate role at home in terms of accountability.

Without the presence of a parent/guardian at home, many students don't feel the need to do well in school. Sure, in rare cases some students will be able to self-motivate themselves to learn as they're growing up. But, in most cases, a student has to have an outside motivator for them to do their homework and learn on a consistant basis. This outside motivator can be a teacher, but only if he or she has a unique relationship with a student. Most of the time, that close bond between student and teacher just isn't practical. Thus, the natural parent-child relationship can easily serve as a way for students to feel motivated as a teacher-student one can't. If a student respects and admires his or her parents, in most cases he or she will also want to do well in school.

  1. I agree that students do need some motivation coming from home. However, I think physical education plays a different role in education that requires outside motivation. I think that students take a little more responsibility than you are giving them credit for. Some students enjoy exercising, practicing sport, and while they might not care about the grade they get in the class, they are just participating because they want to.
