I believe that student learning depends on a number of factors. I think there is a difference between how kids learn in early stages of life compared to later stages. However, no matter what stage it is, I believe there is some sort of combination of influence and responsibilities from the student, teacher, parent, and even other peers.
I feel that at a younger age, the parents and teachers are most responsible for student learning. I would say the break down would be 40% parent, 40% teacher, and 20% student. I see it in my littler sister a lot. It seems that younger kids do not have that much motivation to finish assignments or study for tests as much as older kids do. I know when I was younger, I was always told by teachers to complete assignments at school or was told to do things in class. Even at home, it seems that my parents were always telling me to start my homework assignments or to make sure I studied for my spelling tests. I feel that this age, not only is it essential for the teachers to make sure their students are making progress in the classroom, but making sure that the parents are going above and beyond in making sure their child is keeping up with their school work.
As a child gets older, I feel that the responsibilities the parents, teachers, and students have in learning changes. I think that a huge responsibility is placed on the student as they get older. I feel that it is no longer solely on the parent to make sure that the student keeps up with their school work or makes sure they study and turn in their homework on time. I feel that when a child reaches the later years in high school and moves on to college, the parents are responsible for 10% of learning, teachers are 40% responsible and students are 50% responsible. I see this especially in college when students sometime have the choice to go to class and they can chose to do the work if they want to. It is up to them to receive the education they are paying for and it is up to them to go to class, earn a degree, and eventually get a job. Since they are independent and on their own, it is not up to the parents anymore to make decisions for them. Teachers do a minor roll in that they are the ones educating the students if they are motivated enough to learn.
