Student Learning Responsibility

I believe it depends on the age of the student as to who is responsible for student learning.  At a young age, I believe the responsibility falls mainly on the teacher and parents.  While young, nobody wants to do schoolwork.  This is why it is vital for parents and teachers to become involved.  The teachers need to keep the students focused during the school day.  The parents need to make sure the kids study and do their homework outside of a school setting.  Parents and teachers are a major part of the given student’s education at a young age.  A good education at a young age will lead to the student becoming responsible on his/her own.

Student – 20%
Teacher – 40%
Parents – 40%

Towards the high school and collegiate level of learning, the learning responsibility falls mainly on the student.  Yes, it is important for the instructors to know the content and teach the students the material, but it is up to the students as to how much work they are going to put into the given class.  Once you get older, parents have very little responsibility for student learning.  The students are growing up and need to take the responsibility on their own.  Students can no longer rely on their parents to help with their homework because many times the parents will not know how to complete the given assignment.

Student – 60%
Teacher – 30%
Parents – 10%

  1. I agree with you in that the breakdown of who is responsible changes with the age and maturity level of the student. As the student gets older and more responsible, he or she can handle more of the responsibility. At a younger age, it is the teacher's and parent's responsibilities to get the student to the point where they are able to be self sufficient learners.

  2. Josh,
I think that what you said is right along the same belief I have, and that as students mature it is important for them to become more and more self reliant when it comes to learning. At the same time they are still students though so the teacher does need to still be involved and is responsible for at least sparking the interest of the student so that they can take it upon themselves to further explore the subject. As the students age I think the parent must take less and less involvement in the students learning because by time the students are in college and past the part will most likely not be involved at all.

  3. I agree that age is a huge determinant of who is most responsible for the student's education. As far as college is concerned I completely agree that the student is more responsible than the teacher. Teachers give the information in a small amount of time and expect the students to go home and practice and be able to apply the knowledge on a test. This puts all the work on the student. I would say I don't agree with parents having 10 percent of the responsibility though, I think it is much less.

  4. I like your use of two different distributions of responsibility at different stages in the student's life. I find your low percentage for the young student interesting, but when thought about, it makes a lot of sense. In the beginning the students don't really know how to learn so they need all the guidance they can get. I also agree with the small percentage the parents have towards the latter years. The students need to learn to take care of themselves and that is a perfect example.
