Instructional Use of Technology in PE

Teachers of all subjects integrate technology into their lessons everyday by using computers, cameras, powerpoint presentations, or microphones. People often do not see technology being used in a physical education setting. Many people may think that it is unnecessary or impractical to use technology in a PE class. But as a physical education teacher, I plan on using technology in many of my lessons to assist with my teaching.

The most practical and useful way I will use technology is through video presentation. It is sometimes difficult to show students how to perform a skill because of its complexity or because of the amount of steps it contains. Therefore, using a video will allow me to show each part of the skill slowly and in detail. A video will also be useful if I am teaching elementary students. Younger students may have a harder time retaining information relating to a skill. Using a video will allow me to show the students how to complete a skill without spending a lot of time. Also, elementary school students have a higher chance of completing a skill if they see it being performed by a student of similar age. I would then be able to find a video of an elementary school student performing the skill, which would show the students that they are also capable of completing the skill.

Another useful integration of technology in the PE class would be video cameras. I could use video cameras to assess students’ performance of skills. The videos could be used to show certain students what they need to work on in a particular skill. Using a video would be easier than verbally explaining to the student what he or she must improve. Also, the student will be able to use the video to compare his or her movement patterns as they practice the skill. This will allow the student to learn the skill quicker and perform it more efficiently.

  1. I completely agree with the use of screens and projectors to show skills. This definitely gives the students a better understanding of the task at hand. Also, I really think the use of video cameras to video tape students is great. I never really thought of using this in Physical Education because the lack of time. However, the students seeing themselves perform various tasks will allow them to correct their mistakes. Other than noticing their own mistakes, the teacher will be able to point out the students' strengths as well.
