Who is responsible for student learning?

I think that who is responsible for student learning is largely dependent on the student's age. In elementary school, when the students are young kids, I think that the parents and teacher both have the largest responsibility for student learning. This is because the child is still so young that he or she needs help in learning and in getting used to the schooling process. I would say that the student, in the case of elementary school, only controls about 15% to 20% of the learning, while the parents and the teacher split the other 80% to 85% pretty evenly.

When children move on to higher grade levels, such as high school, I think that the responsibility for student learning changes a lot. In these cases, the student is most responsible for their own learning. Without putting in effort outside of class, it may be hard for the student to do well in a certain class. Therefore, the time that the student puts into the class will really reflect in his or her grade. The parents are really not involved in this process at all. I think that it is important that the parents are supportive and helpful to their child, so they are responsible for a little bit of the student's learning, but they are definitely much less involved than they are when their child is younger. The teacher does play a role in the higher grade levels. I think that the teacher is responsible for student learning in that they are responsible for presenting the material in a way that makes it easy for the student to understand. If the student doesn't understand the material in class, it will be hard for them to work on it outside of the classroom. In the case of higher grade levels, I think that the student controls about 60% to 70% of the learning, while the teacher is responsible for 30% to 35% of the learning, and the parents are responsible for only 5% to 10% of the learning.

Overall, I think that student learning varies with age. As the student gets older, more and more of the responsibility lies with the student himself, and less of the responsibility lies with his parents or teacher.
