Who is responsible for student learning

I believe who is responsible for student learning is dependent on a few things including age and atmosphere. At a young age in a school setting I believe that the teacher is more responsible for student learning than the parents, but at home I think it is very important for the parents to stay very involved and make sure their child is learning. This is not an excuse for younger students not to be responsible for their own learning however, but at the same time the parents should have instilled values in the child for them to be independent enough to take responsibility of learning on their own somewhat. At an early stage I would say the break down would look something like this-

Teacher-40%

Parent-40%

Student-20%

As a child grows I believe they need to become more and more responsible for learning themselves. By time a child is in high school the main responsible for their learning is the child themselves and a the teacher mainly, by this time I think the parents are a distant third. Hopefully the teacher is doing a good enough job of sparking the interest of the student so that they then take it upon themselves to further explore a subject and learn on their own from there. The student becoming more and more responsible for learning on their own is a skill that they will need and will be very important later in life. At the high school level I think the break down should be something like this-

Teacher-35%

Parent-10%

Student-55%

  1. I agree that parents definitely take a step back in high school, as they should. It is important for students to really take ownership for their grades and participation to help them become more independent. More of the weight really falls on the teachers at this time because if they can get excited and enthusiastic about what they are teaching, students will be more likely to participate. Good insights!

  2. I agree that parents need to step back sometimes and allow students to take responsibility and handle certain situations on their own. When it comes to the atmosphere of the student, friends can play a role as I mention on my blog. Friend can be an influential in learning or misbehaving at the middle school and early high school level.

  3. I also agree that as a child gets older, they become more responsible for their own learning. You are right when you say that this is a skill that once acquired, they will be able to use the rest of their lives. You should become more independent as you grow older because once college is done, you will be on your own and you are going to have to be able to support yourself and not rely on parents or teachers to help you. It's important for someone to gain these skills from a young age to prepare for the future.
