Incorporating Technology in my P.E. Instruction

When contemplating the possible role of technology within my own personal instruction, I feel that I will probably find some good uses to integrated into my teachings. How much the technology will be used is something that will be varied throughout the course of different units. I believe that some units of some skills might require the uses of more technology but other skills and activities may be more straightforward and require little technology. Finding the right balance in use of technology seems like the most prominent issue that I will face when it comes to teaching. I think it's important to only use technology when it enhances the understanding of a concept instead of deterring away from how something can be learned. While I believe some technologies can serve to provide very useful ways to advance the teaching of a skill, others can really slow down the process and cut into the activity time that students receive. However, I definitely believe that those technologies that enhance the management and organization of a classroom will probably be the most important to me as far as integration of technology into my P.E. teaching goes.

When it comes to what types of technologies I plan on using, I foresee the use of many different kinds with different uses in order to assist in making the teaching of some skills more easily. I feel that TV's, video recording cameras, poster boards, Internet clips, and many other technologies can really make showing how to complete an activity or skill much easier for a teacher. Being able to visually show students how a task should be done if you the teacher can't perform it yourself can be just as effective as seeing a live demonstration. Also, having poster boards with drawings, pictures, diagrams, or other visual clues can help from students constantly asking how something should be completed. Instead, if those posters are hung around the gym in visible sight, students can simply see how to do it and then try to refine the task themselves before wasting time questioning you. I also think technologies like pedometers, heart rate monitors, DDR games, and Wii game consoles can be very awesome technologies to incorporate into a P.E. class. If students can see recorded results from the pedometers or heart rate monitors then they may be more motivated when working in activities using that equipment. Also, if you can incorporate video gaming consoles into P.E. in an affective lesson, then I think students would really be engaged since videogaming is a huge aspect in today's society. All in all, I definitely think that I will be actively using many technologies in my teachings that enhance my managerial skills as well as enhance the effectiveness of the lesson for the students.

  3. I really enjoyed this point of view. I completely agree that the use of technology might be more applicable for certain units than for others and therefore the use of technology should vary depending on the unit being covered. However, I still feel that every unit can be covered thoroughly without the use of technology if the instructor is well prepared and creative. This statement should not be seen as me trying to imply that using technology makes one less creative as an instructor, I am just using it to further stress my belief that technology is never truly necessary for accomplishing an effective level of PE instruction.

  4. I also agree with Nick and Nicole. In my initial blog post, I said that I could not foresee myself using any technology in the PE setting. I do however think that there are technologies that are acceptable for certain units, like units on the components of fitness and health for example. In this case I would be able to incorporate a powerpoint presentation or a webquest to introduce the ideas and then I could also use different technologies for the students to be active, like Dance Dance Revolution and WiiFit as Nicole mentioned.
