The technology I would like to buy with my $2,000 would be 50 Sportline: TraQ Any-Wear
Pedometers. This can be found at http://www.sportline.com/product.php?prod=60. My justification for wanting piece of technology in my classroom is because it will allow me to track my students physical activity level. It will allow for assessment and give me the ability to track progression in each student. It will aid in fitness testing and help the students learn how to use this device for when they're older and help them remain physically active. It will allow me to set goals for the students to help them remain active outside of the classroom. It will help me explain to the students and motivate them to become more active in every aspect of their life. It will make for various assignments and competitions between the students. I feel that it is important for the students to track their progress to make sure they improve by the end of each year.
I agree with your decision to add pedometers to your classroom and think that they would be an excellent asset to any physical education program, but I can see a few potential flaws with the idea as well. Based on my experience with pedometers and my experience with students in PE classes that do not want to be active gives me the sense that many of the students would find that it is easy to cheat the system by simply shaking their pedometers and adding steps while they are just standing around. However, if your class is on the smaller side or if you have some kind of PE Leader to help out you could easily monitor this kind of problem and come up with some type of punishment for doing so. But other than that I think that all your ideas regarding pedometers in the classroom are great.
