Revisiting My Philosophy Statement

After revisiting my philosophy statement from the beginning of the semester, I decided that I would not change a thing. Although throughout the semester I have learned about a lot of different technologies, I still believe that technology in the physical education setting overall would be very beneficial, no matter what type of technology it is. I believe that any type of equipment or technology will still be beneficial in helping track progress, help educate them for when they're older, and the only thing I believe is still wrong with technology is taking time away from the actual activity, but that can be easily avoided if planned out properly. With that being said, here is my philosophy statement from the beginning of the year...

Teaching with Technology Philosophy Statement

In our society today, people may look at technology as having a negative impact on people. More specifically, technology may be looked at as being the number one reason why kids/adults are sedentary today. When most people hear the word technology they automatically think of television and video games. However, there is a wider spectrum of technology that people may not know about. In physical education, technology has seen to play a big role in student’s development throughout the class and has been looked at as a positive component of Physical Education.

One of the reasons why technology benefits physical education is to assess the student’s progress throughout the years. Almost all schools require their students to go through some sort of fitness testing. Some kids love it; others do not see the point of fitness testing. However, I feel that if the students were tested at the beginning of the year and gradually throughout, they would be more motivated if they could see the progress they were making. This can all be done on different computer software and other forms of technology. Students may take physical education and fitness testing more seriously if they were able to track their progress.

Another reason why technology benefits physical education is because certain types of technology can educate them for the future. Teaching students how to use heart-rate monitors or pedometers at a young age may help them continue their physical activity habits in the future.

The only problem I see with technology in physical education setting is that it would take time out from the students actually participating in physical activity. Also, it would take time and money to train the teachers on how to use the various software or equipment necessary.

All in all, I believe that technology in the physical education setting would benefit the students. It could progress their abilities throughout the year and help them become more interested in physical activity. I feel they would try to improve their scores and make goals if they knew their progress was being monitored. Also, I feel it would help educate them more about physical activity and help them remain active in the future.
