Since writing my philosophy statement, I have learned of many different ways to utilize technology into a physical education class. Throughout the semester we have looked at how websites, Power Point presentations, videos, online discussion rooms, and other forms of technology can be useful in a PE setting. After reviewing my original philosophy statement, I still believe technology can be very helpful when teaching students in a PE class. Also, I still believe that the use of video footage is very beneficial to student learning and should be used when ever possible in a PE class. Lastly. I am still an advocate of using heart rate monitors and pedometers to increase student interest and participation. One thing I have changed is that I would use a website in my teaching. Here is my revised philosophy statement:
Technology is a very important part of learning at all levels of education. Students use technological devices to complete homework assignment, projects, and to study for tests and quizzes. In terms of physical education, I believe technology is not a very popular tool for learning. As a future physical education teacher, I believe technology can be very beneficial to learning in a physical education setting. Therefore, I believe technology should be utilized in PE classes because it can aid in the process of learning.
As a physical education teacher, I would create a website that contains all of the course content that is easily accessible to the students. The students would be able to look up any information on how to perform a certain movement skill or information regarding a certain PE concept. If I were teaching a unit on a certain sport, I would have content related to the sport, such as history, how the sport is played, rules and regulations, equipment used, and anything else that will assist in student learning. I would also have a page set up where the students would be able to ask any questions they may have regarding content of any lessons we are covering. Lastly, I would post videos onto the website that will demonstrate how to perform certain motor skills.
In my opinion, a video is one of the best ways to use technology to help students learn in a PE classroom setting. Although videos can be helpful in describing how to perform a skill or concept, students may become bored or disinterested with what they are viewing. Therefore, I believe other sources of technology should be used more often than videos in a PE setting. Devices such as pedometers and heart rate monitors are much more plausible for use in a PE class. These devices help students become more active while learning about different concepts, such as max heart rate (HR monitor) and exercise (pedometer). Using these devices allows the teacher to set goals for their students, which give the students an incentive to participate and work hard.
Physical education teachers should find ways to integrate technology into their classroom settings because it can be very beneficial to student learning and participation. The use of technology will gain student interest or attention, which will cause them to become more eager to become active during class. As a PE teacher, my number one goal would be to get my students as active as possible. Therefore, if technology can help me achieve this goal I will integrate technology into my curriculum whenever possible or plausible.
I like the idea of having a website about your PE class with all relevant information. It could be kept up to date each unit and can be a way for student to get more information. I think it would also be a very good tool to keep parents up to date with not only what your doing in class, but with policies, procedures and expectations. Having it all spelled out can help when communicating with parents about their child.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the use of technology can be a great means to gather student attention, which will most likely increase their participation and activity levels. I also like how you talked about creating a website specifically for your school/classes. This is a great idea. It can not only provide students with a schedule of what they are doing, with various information provided, but it can also be used for parent invovlement to see what their children will be doing. The bad thing though is that technology is expensive to implement in the classroom, so budgets need to be carefully monitored and maintained. Teachers have to work hard to get more money for technology implementation.
