Reviewed Philosophy Statement

After looking over my philosophy statement, a few things have changed.  I still firmly believe that technology will make the students look forward to engaging in Physical Education class each and every day.  I previously mentioned the use of video games to enhance the class.  Yes, this will prove effective, but there are so many more ways to use technology in Physical Education.  The use of heart rate monitors, pedometers, PowerPoints, web quests, and videos, will prove extremely valuable in the course.

I find that the use of video footage will be the absolute most valuable in a Physical Education course.  Yes, the cost of the equipment will be expensive, but with this equipment the course will be positively affected.  The video camera will allow the teacher and the students to tape the students’ movements and motions while performing a specific skill.  This can be replayed with the camcorder or can be connected to a computer and shown on a larger screen.  The camcorder will allow the students to see for themselves what they are doing wrong while performing a specific skill.  I personally find it extremely difficult to correct a movement when I can not see what I am doing wrong.

Another technology that I find extremely useful is a computer program that will track the students’ progress from the beginning of the course to the end of the course.  This can be used as an assessment tool or simply for the students’ benefit.  In any Physical Education course, every student should show improvement from the beginning to the end of the course.  If this does not occur, the teacher is not doing his job.  Therefore, this will not only help the students, but help the teacher learn how to make his students more active.

The goal of Physical Education is to make students become physically active.  Physical Education class is a great place for this to start.  The use of technology in the class will make the students want to participate in the class.  All of the technologies we learned in this course can be utilized in Physical Education in some way to improve student learning.

  1. I liked the ideas that you had for use of technology in physical education. I agree that video is extremely important in these classes. I agree with you that it is useful because the students can see for themselves how they are performing a certain skill, but I also think that it is important for teachers because they can use the video to evaluate the students. They can even then use the computer program that you discussed to input the evaluations they made from the video. Overall, I agree with you that technology is beneficial for physical education.

  2. I agree with you when you say that technology will motivate students to participate or become interested in physical education. Even the smallest technologies, such as pedometers, can make a PE class more interesting. I also agree that video footage is the most valuable use of technology for a PE class. Videos are very helpful because they can show students how to properly perform certain skills or movements that may be difficult to explain with words alone. Lastly, I believe a computer program that can track student progress will be very helpful in terms of keeping students motivated to participate. This is a long term log that can show the students how much they have improved in a certain category throughout the year.
