Purchasing technology for $2000

If I was given an amount of $2,000 to spend on technology for my P.E. classroom I would purchase a Panasonic Camcorder, a tripod, 25 Timex Personal Trainer Heart Rate Monitors, and 4 data Recorders for the Heart Rate Monitors. The total cost of my purchases would be $1,988.53. The reasons I chose these items are to help aid in the assessment of the students as well as provide them with new ways to receive visual and data feedback. I feel that in Physical Education classes the assessment often takes a backseat to learning of the skills. However, if you can efficiently and effectively assess students they can become better at the skills and activities you teach them. With the video camera and tripod you could record students completing skills, possibly even more than one at a time and then you can watch the tapes later to do the actual grading. That way you wouldn’t have to waste too much time recording grades or going through individual students one at time. Plus, with the camera I am purchasing it can record right to the camera’s hard drive and then these videos or still frames can be transferred to my personal computer via a USB cord. There would be no need for videotapes, mini-DVD’s, or any other storage systems. I could also show the videos to the students to show them feedback on how they perform a skill and how they can perfect it after reviewing what they look like. The Heart Rate Monitors and data recorders could also be used for assessment and to provide the students with immediate feedback on their progress. This type of heart rate monitor not only records heart rate but also counts calories, time in target zones, and uses the data recorders to hold all of this information. The data recorders can hold multiple students’ information so that there doesn’t need to be one for every student. These monitors would allow students to track their progress in any activity and they can record their HR and calories burned on a daily to keep track. Also, on fitness days, it would make it a lot easier for them to know if they are in their target HR zone so that they know if they are working at a hard enough level. Furthermore, if I can have them keep their information in the data recorders, I can assess their participation or improvements that I may use for possible grades.

  1. Nicole - I think this is a great way to spend your money. You can utilize video recorders in so many different ways to help improve your students fitness levels and skill levels. Heart rate monitors are important for assessment and would be a great aspect to have in your physical education program. They can help track fitness levels for you students and help them set goals for their fitness levels. I think this was a great way to spend your $2000. I didn't think of some of these things and it has given me ideas about how to make my physical education class so much better!
