Technology in Physical Education Philosophy

I believe that technology used in the physical education setting can greatly benefit the students and the teachers. Technology has become apart of everyday life in today’s society and I think that it should be used more often in physical education. Technology in physical education would improve students’ experiences and also how they learn certain skills and abilities. I believe that there are many benefits we can get from technology but there are also some drawbacks from it.

Certainly the pros of technology outweigh the cons. Technology will facilitate students to learn faster and easier. Using a camera to record the students performing the skill will allow them to go back and look at how they performed the skill and correct it if need be. By using technology to help take attendance will allow for more participation time for the students. Technology can also improve the experience students have in physical education. Technology is not just there to help students learn, it is also there for them to have fun with. Heart rate monitors can be used to assess students’ performance and how hard they are working. Technology is also beneficial for teachers as it can help prepare lesson plans and activities. Microsoft Word and Excel are two most used programs to develop lesson plans and used for grading.

While there are benefits of technology in physical education, there are also drawbacks of having it. Depending on the district you teach in and the budget provided, you might be able to get the latest and advanced versions of technology for your class. Technology is expensive and the teachers need to be knowledgeable of it to be able to teach their students how to use it. Setting up the equipment needed takes time away from learning time.

  1. I agree that technology should be used more often in physical education settings. The vast majority of people do not associate technology with physical education because it may not be seen as beneficial to learning PE concepts. I also agree that using technology in PE can help students learns concepts and skills faster. Using a video to show students their physical activity performances will help them see what changes need to be made for improvement. Lastly, I very much agree that technology should be used to help students enjoy their PE experiences. AS PE teachers, we must make sure that students are given motivation to participate so that they will become more physically active.
