Online Physical Education

The first thought that comes to mind when I hear about online Physical Education is that there is no possibility that it can work.  Unlike Math, Science, and History, Physical Education is a subject that many individuals would not expect to take place online.  Hearing the term online Physical Education just does not sound right.  Online Physical Education seems to promote the inactivity levels in today’s society.  Can we really count on students to actually participate in physical activity during an online Physical Education program?  The main goal of Physical Education is to increase the activity level of the students.  With the class being offered online, how are Physical Educators going to know whether or not the students actually participated in the activity.  As a future Physical Educator, I am completely against online P. E.  I personally want to be in the gymnasium or on the outdoor fields where I can motivate my students to become more physically active.
The only possible way online Physical Education can work is if it is a hybrid course.  As we learned in class, a hybrid course consists of reading and taking various tests and quizzes online, but also getting into the gymnasium to participate in physical activity.  I believe this can potentially work best because the time spent discussing readings during class can be eliminated by doing so online.  Also, the hybrid course allows the Physical Educator to motivate their students to be active as well as actually see them participating in physical activity.  If online Physical Education is offered, I believe it needs to be offered in the hybrid form.

  1. Josh, I agree with your statement that online physical education could only work if it was a hybrid course. Physical education, like you said, is all about getting your students active and it definitely seems hard to do that if physical education is only offered online. I think you should try to have an open mind about OLPE though. In the economy we have today it is harder for school administrations to keep their budgets. Physical Education may be one of the first subjects cut if necessary, but one way that could help cut down costs is if physical education was online. In order for OLPE to really work I agree that it would be key to figure out a way to make sure your students are actually participating in the exercises and activities they are supposed to. Overall, I agree with what you are saying about OLPE, but I think it is important to stay open minded because one day you may have to teach physical education online!

  2. Josh, the first thing that came to your mind, is exactly what came to mine! In fact I think I might be like you, which is totally againist it. However I could see the benefits. What about those in society who are overweight, if they were able to conduct P.E. from the convert of their own home maybe they would finally be active. I agree there are several flaws that need to be ironed out, but couldn't you see this actually working if a legit grading system could some how be constructed?
