Online Physical Education

In my opinion, online physical education should not be an option for teaching PE to students. PE is meant to teach motor skills and movement concepts to students that will influence them to become physically active for life. I don’t see how an online PE class can achieve this goal if the student is sitting in front of a computer for the whole class period. Even if the online PE class assigns physical activities for the students to perform, there is no way of knowing if the student actually performed these activities.

The only way an online PE class would work is if the students were dedicated to learning the skills and concepts of PE, which is very rare. I believe the benefits of a non-online PE class greatly outweigh the benefits of an online one. A classroom PE setting allows the students to interact with other people, which stimulate their affective domain skills. Doing so will teach the students the proper way to handle social interactions, solve problems with other people, and will improve their relationships with friends or family. Lastly, a classroom PE setting will give a greater chance of physical activity, which is the primary goal of physical educators. Although online physical education may be very useful for certain children, I believe a classroom setting is a more effective method of teaching physical education.

  1. I agree that the online way that online PE would work is if students were actually motivated to learn the concepts and skills on thier own. However, this is not the case. There are lots of kids out there who do love PE and want to learn how to play sports, but they would rather just play the full game and learn how to play that way. They would rather not work on drills or skill activities. You would have to be highly selfmotivated to even begin to learn by yourself. The best way of learnign is through practice, feedback, and demonstration. This is not a plausible method of learning skills and concepts. Students need the practice in a classroom setting, not online. How can one truly learn if they are working by themselves, they only sports they may have an advantage in are individual sports. Even these sports rely on an outside person for help. All in all the social aspect is an important part as a well.
