I do not believe online physical education is a good alternative to in class physical education when comparing both. Online P.E. has little to no way of getting students actually active and assessing their activity level. Also I don’t believe that a skill or athletic activity can be taught over the internet, even if there are videos of the skill it cannot compare to instant feedback from a instructor right in front of the student. I don’t see any way in which online physical education can hold the students accountable for actually being active which I think is a main purpose of physical education.
The only positive thing I can imagine from online physical education, is for an older population of adults that want to continue to be physically active. The reason I believe that online physical education will work for these individuals versus younger students is that these people will be more motivated to stay active since they are searching this program out without the requirement of taking it. This is why I do feel it is important for online physical education programs to be developed, and that they be well thought out. As far as requiring or giving students the option to take online physical education instead in class instruction I don’t believe they can even be compared, as of right now I see no option better for students than required in class physical education.
I agree that complete online Physical Education should not be an option. I also agree that it should be offered to students or even adults seeking extra physical activity to stay active. What do you think about the hybrid option? This will allow the teacher to assess the physical activity levels. This form of Physical Education will also allow the students to complete the required readings and exams online. The readings and exams might take away from activity time during regular Physical Education. However, during the hybrid all of that will be taken care of online. This leaves the entire class period to participate in physical activity.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a really interesting point that I had not considered. If you did use the hybrid model for online physical education I could see some potential benefits from it. In the long run though I do not think any online physical education class can have the same success as a normal physical education class, but in certain situations I do believe the hybrid model should adapt well to make online physical education a good option.
