I believe that the integration of technology within physical education is an important platform to begin to employ. Technology is an ever increasing source of information in today’s world. The use of electronic devices can help to correlate with student’s lives, and can also help them increase their technological capabilities in the modern digital era. The use of technology helps to gather and improve student’s interest and understanding when participating within the classroom. Thus, an increased interest in physical education will most likely lead to increased motivation to involve themselves in class activities and participate fully. In fact, technology can be used to help create a more authentic teaching environment which allows for more creativity within class, as well as a more pleasurable atmosphere for the students.
Not only can technology be used efficiently in Physical Education classrooms, but it can be used as an effective method to teach and facilitate student learning. Technology in the classroom can be used to assist with visual and auditory demonstrations and displays, can provide instant feedback, can be used as a method of reference and assessment, and can be used to help gather research/data and information dealing with fitness and physical education. Technology involved in the classroom encompasses things such as the use of Microsoft PowerPoint slideshows, audio/visual display of sports and skills on DVD and VHS, attendance taking and performance assessment, videotaping for improving teaching and providing corrective feedback, heart rate monitors and pedometers to check for activity length and intensity, various exercise video gaming devices (DDR), and student/ teacher use of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word to create documents and lessons with gathered data and/or information. Overtime computer technology can be used to assess and track fitness results within the classroom, allowing the teacher to assess their physical education program, create new goals, and implement new teaching and learning strategies. The use of technology should not be limited to academics and after-school use, but it should be implemented within the physical education classroom.
Technology doesn’t just affect teachers and their learners, but it can affect the relationship between teachers and parents. Technology can assist in communication inside and outside of school, and can create parental support of their child’s physical education. E-mail and blogs are great platforms that can be used to communicate what is happening within class and the community that deals with physical education and physical activity. These methods of communication help to keep parents interested and involved in their child’s learning experiences. E-mails and blogs can provide updates on student progress, current/future class activities, and useful information about physical activity.
Although the costs of technology can be quite high, there is support from various professional establishments for the accumulation of money for such technological equipment. The use of physical education grants and fundraisers can be used to help supply funds for technology and improvement within the classroom. Therefore, teachers must take advantage of possible opportunities to improve their physical education program in the digital era. However, teachers must remember that although technology is a useful tool in physical education, teaching approaches that employ technology should be utilized to maximize the total activity time within the teaching environment. Overall, technology can provide a significant positive learning experience for students living in the modern era.
I agree with what you wrote. I especially agree that an increase in technology in physical education will lead to increased motivation for the students. Since today's world is so technology based, and kids spend a lot of their free time using technology, they will be more likely to be involved in something if it uses technology. I also liked how you thought about how technology can be used for communication between teachers and parents. Using technology like emails and computers makes it much easier for parents to contact teachers, or vice versa. Overall, I agree with most of what you wrote about in your technology philosophy statement, including that technology can influence positive learning experience.
